Nike

Nike, originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports, was founded in 1964 by Philip Knight, a University of Oregon track athlete & his coach Bill Bowerman. The company initially operated as a distributor for Japanese shoe maker Onitsuka Tiger, selling shoes at track meets out of Knight's car. The company grew quickly, and in 1966, opened its first retail store in Santa Monica, California. In 1972, BRS introduced its first line of Nike shoes. The name Nike derived from the Greek goddess of victory. In 1978, BRS, Inc. officially renamed itself Nike, Inc.
